SCOTTISH HARP FAQ
Is the Scottish Harp difficult to play?
Think of it like a sideways piano! It is as difficult as any other instrument to learn and play, but the harp sounds beautiful even if you are just learning, unlike a lot of instruments! You can feel accomplished and enjoy playing the harp at any age or ability level.
Certainly not to start, we can teach you as you learn the harp. Scottish music was originally an oral and aural tradition, so learning by ear is common - though it is recommended to learn to read music eventually, as this will open you up to learning more music.
Of course not! Anyone can learn at any age, though for the younger potential student, it's important that they show interest, and are old enough to understand the responsibility of caring for an instrument.
Scottish music is mostly played on a 34 string lever harp, as pictured above. These harps are much smaller than the large orchestral pedal harps, more transportation friendly and are strung with a light tension to enable the player to play fast, ornatmented music. Younger and smaller pupils may play on smaller harps with less strings. Makes of harp can be recommended as needed, and harp rentals will be available through Vermont Violins and Harp International.
Individual lessons an run anywhere from an hour to 90 minutes, depending on the student's age, ability level, and interest. Group lessons are generally an hour, and Workshops can run anywhere from 1 hour to 3 hours (with breaks of course!).
Like learning any other instrument, an initial investment in tuition is necessary and you will need a harp to practice on. You can rent a harp or buy a harp, depending on your financial situation, though it is always advised to rent a harp until you are comfortable with your commitment level to the instrument, and you have found a make of harp you like (it's a very personal preference).
One hour individual lessons on the harp with Jackie at Lewis Highland Arts are $30, and can be adjusted depending on lesson length required by request. Group lessons will generally be cheaper per student depending on the number of students. Workshops will have a set price. Lessons with guest harp tutors may be available in the future, and their cost will be determined by the tutor.
